Lighthouse Beach in Chatham, Cape Cod, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cape. The active lighthouse is perched on a bluff that overlooks the beach and projects a beam that sweeps out to the ocean. You can walk out to the end of the three-mile beach, wade in the surf, watch the harbor seals. But my intention in making this painting was not for the sake of tourism but, as the ghostly figures on the beach imply, to suggest that all of this--the beach, the houses, the Cape itself--is destined to disappear.
