This grove of trees near the bottom of the trail to the beach at Fort Hill, at Eastham, on Cape Cod, has long fascinated me. From a distance it looks like a single large tree with a rounded top but as you get closer to it, you realize that it is made up of many trees, of various sizes and ages, that make no coherent sense close up but that cohere as you distance yourself from it. Fort Hill, as I have remarked elsewhere, is one of my favorite Cape Cod landscapes, changeable with the light and the season.
